How many times have you been in a Lyft or Uber with an “air freshener” fragrance so strong you’ve had to open the window in 25-degree temperatures?
How many times has your co-worker’s perfume lingered in your cubicle, causing the onset of a headache and mild nausea?
There’s a reason these artificial fragrances are making us sick. And the fragrance industry offers no transparency to let you know what you’re really inhaling.
The rules regarding fragrance labeling are set up to protect the secret recipes of the companies that create them. Companies have 3,100 mystery chemicals they can use to scent products, plus additional additives, and list all of it only as “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label. They can also combine additives like phthalates, petrochemicals, and even oxybenzone—and none of it needs to be disclosed.
Many fragrances have been tied to hormone disruption and allergies. Phthalates have been linked to endocrine disruption and reproductive problems and even breast cancer.
It’s time for transparency with fragrances! Companies should use ingredients they are proud of and list them on the label. Organizations like Women’s Voices for the Earth have been pushing cleaning and personal care companies to do this for years.
That’s why I was so excited to learn that Goddess Garden, best known for its organic sunscreens, introduced a new line of essential-oil roll-on perfumes. The perfumes are scented with pure essential oils and are free from synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and mystery chemicals.
The new line includes five scents: Lavender Sky, Citrus Sunrise, Wildflower, Amber Fire, and Rainforest, all made with certified-organic essential oils and curated specifically with scent and mood-boosting properties in mind. My personal favorite is Amber Fire, light and sensual, my new go-to for every day.
Even among natural products, labels often list only ‘a blend of natural and essential oils.’ This is simply not enough information if you have allergies, sensitivities, or prefer clean ingredients. Goddess Garden perfumes are Leaping Bunny certified and are fully transparent with each and every one of their ingredients.
And rather than repurpose aromatherapy remedies as perfumes, Goddess Garden made the aromatherapy benefits a secondary bonus and focused specifically on the scent. They developed sophisticated perfumes that are romantic and fun, using only safe, clean ingredients people feel good about wearing.
Spring is the time when we open our doors and windows and clean up and refresh our homes. As you kick off your spring cleaning, don’t forget to clean up your fragrance routine. Look for fragrances hidden in not only your perfume, but in your cleaning supplies, air fresheners, haircare, soaps, facial care, and cosmetics. And remember, even if something isn’t heavily scented, it may still contain fragrance. They’re often used to conceal the smell of the chemicals, so label reading is a must!
Goddess Garden perfumes are only $14.99 and available on Amazon.
