Pregnancy Update: Brighter Days, Bigger Belly

I am approaching eighteen weeks pregnant and can finally report that I am feeling BETTER! I won’t sugar coat it – it has been a rough one so far. I am still taking Zofran for nausea but at least I can say that this medication works! But the key thing is that I am finally getting my energy back. Still going to sleep at 9 p.m. but at least not requiring daily naps! Probably also drinking a bit too much caffeine, but with your second child you really have to have some coffee!

As for keeping up with fitness, I am happy to report that my weight has not yet reached the panic level: at week 17 I weighed in with a 14 pound gain – perfectly acceptable in my book.

I am also keeping up with CrossFit 3-4 times per week, which has been challenging to say the least. Modifying and scaling have been a must for me ever since I felt the first pangs of conception. Running has become a chore, partly because my boobs have swelled to an uncomfortable level. My endurance is less than half what it once was and any exercise involving the support of body weight is already 15 pounds harder than it already was.

I know the most important thing is that I continue to show up. Ultimately I would love to hang in there until I go into labor, but I know I have to take it one day at a time. It’s also especially challenging because I most often attend the “Intensity” (formerly bootcamp) classes which are as intimidating as they sound. They are harder in pregnancy because they focus more on cardio endurance that weight lifting – and it was recently confirmed to me that I am, in fact, the only person who has ever attempted to regularly do these classes while pregnant.

But by far the most exciting news that has put a new spring in my step is finding out the sex of the baby. However, it is not yet 100% confirmed so you will just have to wait a couple weeks until I get a more thorough ultrasound. 😉
