United By Blue – Organic Clothing That Cleans Up The Oceans

In 2006 Philly local Brian Linton began his eco-entrepreneurial journey by starting a company that sold a line of sustainable jewelry that donated a percentage of profits to ocean conservation initiatives. And in May 2010 he founded the groundbreaking organic apparel brand United By Blue which removes a pound of trash from oceans and waterways for every product sold.

The brand originated with men and women’s graphic t-shirts–a stone-washed, slub jersey hand-cut, and hand-sewn t-shirt made from 100% organic cotton. Since then, they’ve added standard short sleeve and full sleeve tees and hoodies and pullovers. But I was most excited to learn that United By Blue now makes products for the whole family: and the organic children and youth t-shirts are made right here in Philadelphia.

Since April 2010, UBB has removed 141,000 pounds of trash from oceans and waterways from 18 states during 80 cleanups with 2,334 volunteers. In Philadelphia alone, UBB has removed 12,216 pounds of trash from the Schuylkill River, Delaware River, and Cobbs Creek with 622 volunteers.

They are also a certified B Corporation, which sets the benchmark for transparency and environmental stewardship. I can’t imagine a better company to support with my green dollar – doing good right on the homefront!
