Healthy Options for Halloween Candy: Part of the Green Halloween Blog Carnival

Halloween is a really scary time for green and healthy moms. No, it’s not the reruns of Friday the 13th on the Fear Network – it’s the gallons of high-fructose-corn-syrup-trans-fat-GMO-artificial-crap candy collected by our kids on the one day of the year it is pretty much mandated to do so.

I am all about moderation and don’t mind the kids binging on junk food for one night. The problem is that the stuff hangs around the house for ages – and even I end up snacking on mini Twix bars. With a four-year-old it will probably get a bit more challenging to hide or throw away the candy after the first night. So I need to start making plans for how to appropriately disperse the remainders without causing a total meltdown.

In the meantime I can still be the one house on the block offering something a bit healthier. No, I will not be that mom who hands out toothbrushes or, god forbid, raisins. But I can still select tasty treats by more sustainable, healthy, and overall good brands. And maybe finding these treats in their bags will give moms a few good ideas for next year!

UNREAL Candy replaces corn syrup, hydrogenated fats, GMOs, artificial colors, flavors and preservatives with real cane sugar, real milk, more peanuts, and twice the cacao.  Disguised as “knock offs” of your favorite conventional candies, they are available for the same price and at the same convenience stores where your kids beg you for Milky Ways! The company understands that its candy still isn’t “healthy” for you. But it’s a special treat that you can feel better about!

Yummy Earth Organic Lollipops

If you’re going to buy chocolate, make it fair trade. A great treat for moms, these milk chocolate pieces are made with organic-certified, shade-grown, ethically traded dark chocolate with 70% cocoa content. They also come in dark chocolate, a special treat for mom.

3Girls Holistic Orange Pop Lip Gloss

This fun lipgloss is good and safe enough to eat – but hopefully the little princesses at your door will keep it on their lips. Tasty, fragrant, shiny and safe, Orange Pop Lip Gloss lets your little holistic put something on her lips to make em’ shine. At $3 a pop they are a great deal but maybe a little much for every trick-or-treater. But a great pick for Halloween party favors or a few special ghouly girls!

Other good ideas are cereal bars, granola bars, crayons, stickers, home-baked cookies,
