Ask Magazines to Lose the Poison Perfume Pages

Fragrance can be a beautiful thing. We remember the scents of the places and people we love and yearn to fill our homes with lovely aromas. I adore a nice perfume, and I am fortunate to work with several green beauty companies who produce safe non-toxic fragrances for body and home. With so many beautiful natural perfumes on the market, it’s easy to avoid the heavy chemical nasty stuff. Except when it’s shoved in your mailbox.

While I love my fashion, beauty, and lifestyle magazines and subscribe to many to support the hand that feeds me (I am a publicist after all) I just can’t believe perfume sample marketing is still so prevalent. In the age of allergies, migraines, chemical sensitivities, and awareness of the toxic chemicals in conventional fragrances, so many magazines are still loading their pages with ad inserts coated in synthetic fragrance.

That’s why my green beauty friend Rachel Sarnoff has started a petition to ask the CEOs of major publishing houses to reconsider this antiquated and harmful advertising tactic.

A 2010 study by the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that top-selling perfumes contain, on average, 14 different hazardous chemicals that aren’t listed on their labels.

Many of these perfumes contain toxic chemicals like diethyl phthalate, which has been linked to developmental, reproductive, endocrine and immune system problems, as well as allergies and hormone disruption. Typically, perfumes also include paraben preservatives, which have been linked to early onset of puberty in girls.

We can choose not to buy toxic perfumes, but we can’t do anything about the perfume samples that scent magazine pages.
