It’s always a little alarming when your favorite mom + pop organic business is bought up by the big guy. Especially when that big guy is Coca Cola, who purchased Honest Tea in 2011. But Honest decided to stick to its name and keep it real. It’s still operating as an independent business unit and developed a unique operating model that allows Honest Tea autonomy to continue to run its day-to-day operations while accessing the scale benefits of the Coca-Cola system in various areas, including manufacturing and distribution.
Founded in 1998, Bethesda, MD based company Honest Tea is the nation’s top-selling organic bottled tea company specializing in lower calorie beverages that are sweetened with less sugar than most bottled beverages. Honest Tea’s product lines include Honest Tea ready-to-drink bottled teas, Honest Ade, and Honest Kids organic thirst quenchers. All varieties are USDA-certified organic and all tea varieties are Fair Trade Certified.
I was pleased to hear that the company is now phasing all sugar out of its kids drinks, because even organic sugar isn’t needed when you are working with fresh organic fruit. Personally, I prefer all my teas unsweetened and only drink the pure, unsweetened varieties of green and black tea. That is, when I’m on the go and can’t just brew my own!
One lucky reader will win an HONEST Tea package chock full of samples and swag. Contest closes 8/20 and a winner will be randomly selected.
